New findings from Beadalon®

Have you seen the new findings by Beadalon® called "wrappers ™"? If you have not, check these two designs I made featuring them.
They basically are frames with notches around its edges, and you can tuse that to secure beads, stones or other findings within. Anything you make it will become 3#D and adds lots of texture to it.

Above a simple charm bracelet using flat oval tiger-eye and howlite briolettes (dyed turquoise color).
I used hematite 22 gauge Artistic Wire ® to wrap the stones within those marquee shape wrappers. It's my lucky charm bracelet. Watch those eyes!

Above, a away more complex piece made with several wrappers filled with DeCoRe clay within - I mixed small portions of the clay and kept in place holding between my fingers and pressing one side down onto the back of a SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS crystal mesh.
On the opposite side I set small pointed Swarovski® stones.
The "ghost" touch was done gluing a piece of black Artistic Wire mesh on top of DeCoRe® clay as well.
Gunmetal chains work as the foundation of the piece, and then circles of black Beadalon 49 strands beading wire were added to it.
Last but not least, I brought those peacock Labrador Czech glass beads to the spotlight because I feel like they would add that fabulous metallic print look. Those beads can be found throuhg John ead Corporation.

Experimenting with clay

Hello everyone...I am back! Thinsg have been crazy at Nando's Studio, so please accept my apologies for not posting anything in ages.

Here are some of my designs made with different brands of clay.

I am using on the same way many fellow designers have been using but I want to explore different surfaces and create something more dimensional.

I have tried five different brands and I have my favorite and I will disclosure that when I feel like. Usually I do more than one project at once and I do want a product that gives me more tome before it starts hardening.

Here are some designs under my modern and expressive eyes.

Necklace - matte gold bamboo chain and wood pendant...crystal stones set on clay around the edge of the leaf...second piece made to test how wood would react in contact with clay. Brand used: Apoxie™

Similar components applied to the design above - copper color is the main shade although a mix of purple velvet, cyclamen opal, silk, crystal silver night, indicolite and black diamond from the SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS color chart brings an almost "Carnival" vibe to the pendant. Copper Tierra Cast® spacer beads in contrast with brown leather cord. Crystal beads attached to Tierra Cast connectors.

The pendant above features opalescent shades of fancy stones by SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS set on light mint clay (I mixed two colors to get to this one). Grey curb chain.

Ring designed by Wyatt White using hematite 18 gauge Artistic Wire to spotlight fabulous and outrageous white opal "Sphinx" stone by SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS (or course!!!).

On the background another very strong trend: a white ceramic watch by Stuller® Inc.

Above one of my favorite experiments using clay - my "Stardust" necklace. Gorgeous flat oval blue stone beads linked to hold a daliciuus agate slice pendant framed by black diamond cut chain and crystal stones. Roundels made of amethyst, amazonite, sodalite and carnelian.

Cobalt blue clay was used to frame and hold all components of the pendant together. This pendant born out of my curiosity on seen how a surface of a gemstone would react once combined with clay.

FREE FRIDAY PROJECT

I am back posting free projects on Fridays to kick off your weekend with a great diy project in mind.
This project if from my book "Modern Expressions: making fabulous and fashionable jewelry..." by North Light Books.
Feel free to make changes to create your own version. The chains I used on this design can be replaced by any of the newest chains available in the market right now. A copper version for Fall is a goodidea, think about a combo of copper, vintage pink and rusty burgundy.

314mm black brass brushed round beads

19 12mm black brass jump rings

36 2” gun metal ball head pins

½ft gun metal medium square cable chain

2½ ft gun metal textured etched large circle chain

Tools:

flushcutter

chainnose pliers

flatchain nose pliers

Instructions:

1. Cut square cable chain into a 27 links piece and set aside.

2.Make keystone links: feed ball head pin onto one of the holes of keystone bead,add one bead bumper, one purple crystal and another bead bumper, then makesimple large loop (big enough to attach to large chain circles) on top of beadand trim excess wire. Usinganother ball head pin insert a bead bumper then into the other hole of thekeystone bead in the opposite direction of the first head pin, add a purplevelvet bead, another bead bumper then make a matching ring and cut excess. Make6 more of the same and set aside.

3. Feed one tanzanite bead onto a ballhead pin and make wrapped loop. Make 17 more of these and set aside.

4. Feed one brushed black metal bead ontoball head pin, add 6 tanzanite crystal components and one purple crystal. Makesimple loop on top of bead and set aside. Make three of these.

5. Cut a piece of the circle chain to 13circles in length with the oval links attached at the ends. Find the center link. Connect the end of the chain cut instep 1 to the first circle to the right of the center link, then connect the7’th link to the circle to the left of the center circle. Connect the 17’th link to the circle2’nd away from center on the right, then connect the end of the chain to the2’nd circle away from the center on the left. This zig-zag chain pattern will hold the center of the necklacetogether so it will sit correctly on the neck.

6. Begin attaching the keystonelinks (made in step 2) onto the 7 center circles of the necklace, carefullyopen the circle and slide on one of the loops of the keystone link then theother, Making sure that the keystone links do not interfere with the links onthe circle chain so that thenecklace lays properly. Repeatthis until all 7 of the keystone links are placed inside the rings, close therings so that the keystone links will not come off.

7.Cut a piece of the circle chain containing 9 circles, without the oval linksattached at the ends. Find thecenter of the chain and attach one of the cluster components made in step 4,then add one to each of the rings on either side of the center.

8. Create a final drop with one keystonebead by sliding a ball head pin through the narrow side of the bead then add apurple bead, form a loop with the round nose pliers and wrap the end around twotimes. Connect a single large jumpring to this component, then continue to make a chain using two jump ringsuntil you have a double chain formed containing 8 jump rings long. Connect the end of this to the rightside of the necklace going through the two oval links on the ends.

8. Use two jump rings to connect theother side of the ring chain then connect to the gun metal badge clip and voila!!!

Montreal, mon amour cherri!

I went to Montreal last weekend with Wyatt.

He has to teach 2 workshops at one Frabels Inc., one of the Beadalon's distributors in Canada, and of course, he invited me to assist him wiht the classes.

Classes sold out immediately and we had a great time with some lovely ladies. We also had on both classes some ladies who were in the SWAROVKSI ELEMENTS Anchor's Away Creative Cruise and was very nice to get together with them so soon.

Here are some pics taken by me during the class.

Wyatt had a point presentation pepared and the ring soptlighted on the screen was the project. SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS gently donated the crystals for Wyatt's classes.

The satff with Frabels decorated all the walls of the entire room with huge posters of Swarovski Elements.

I promoted my book and the SWAROVKI ELEMENTS website, as well.

Wyatt gave to the ladies all of his attention.

My favorite month of the year

Hello, my followers and readers! September is here...and this month I will celebrate one more Spring, the birthday of some very special Brazilian friends, St Cosmos and St Damian 's day, Gal Costa ( my Brazilian diva's birthday), the anniversary of my partnership in life, OMG so many to celebrate that I could easily be already handling a flute of champagne...ths early morning. lol

It has been awhile but life is unpredictable and lots of activities took me a little be away from here. Most of them all good!

No promises but let's how how often I will be posting this month.

I have a trip scheduled to Montreal next week, where I will be assisting Wyatt White during a workshop of jewelry making. I will give you more details down the road.

I am excited about meeting new jewelry making lovers and visiting Montreal for the first time everrrrr.

Juts the idea of hearing some French language all the time makes it a definite place to be...I have already practicing on some street names...it sounds so Jeanne Moreau.....ahahahhaha

And here is the jewelry subject of the day:

I created this set for Beadalon to be posted on the A/C.Moore website...structural jewelry components by Beadalon and beads, metal filigree parts form A.C.Moore. The inspiration was the Italian (no, really?!? lol) Riviera de La Palm coast, by the Adriatic sea. Now that we are approaching the end of Summer, I think that's a good way of setting our mind on that elegant but laid back attitude that it's typical of the hot and steamy Summer nights...summer skies...summer parties.

Wait for more fabulous news!

In the pictures above, myself demoing for John Bead Corp at Bead Fest in KOP last year. Those demos were one of the 2010 highlights for me. I usually only demo for Beadalon and SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS and there is already a comfort level established. Demos are tricky things and we don't always get a good crowd.

Trade Shows tailored to the businesses offered a much better environment for a successful demo, but as you can see in the picture, sometimes the general public does want to pay attention and learn a little more.

Considering that there are many people who remains clueless about the simplest jewelry making techniques, it was great to be able to share a little of my knowledge in a different space, surrounded by the JB's crew.

Pre Fall/Winter 2011

I recently made a set of jewelry specifically to be worn by a friend at an event in New York.

I took the opportunity to practice with few new jewelry componenst and the only thing I can say is that I was very happy with the final result. I was pleased not only with the color palette but with the quality of the ingredients as well. I am considering those pieces a start point for my Fall/Winter collection for the current year.

I have not posted free projects for the last 3 months so I am sharing with you this design create by me for a book called "Four Seasons of Beading" edited by Barb Switzer and published by DRG on 2009.
It's perfect for lazy afternoons and breezy summer days.
Enjoy it!

Introduction:

A delicate petal filigree, a lustrous strand of pearls, the incredible fruity padparadscha crystals and the sophisticated off-set Venetian pebble took me back to the tropics and this design duet was born blossoming to the everlasting Summer mornings.

Material:

SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS assortment:

10 8mm Padparadsha Round Beads – Article 5000

13 4mm Padparadscha Round Beads - Article 5000

1 6mm Padparadscha Bicone Beads - Article 5328

30 12 mm white cultured freshwater coin pearls

1 19 x 14mm rubino pink dichroic pebble Venetian bead by Murano Glass

41 2mm white oval bead bumpersä

4 silver plated wire guardianä

sterling silver spacer beads

4 silver plated # 3 crimp tubes

1 silver plated # 1 crimp tube

1 medium size white filigree rose

26 gauge white Artistic Wireâ

6 12/0 hexagon gold-lustered seed beads

7 15/0 one side cut galvanized seed beads

1 sterling silver 3 rings square toggle clasp

40 inches .018 19 strands white satin stringing wire

Tools:

Flush cutters

Chain nose pliers

Round nose pliers

Standard crimp tool

Instructions

Adding small crystals to filigree

1a - Pre cut 5 pieces of 4 inches length of magenta 26 gauge Artistic Wire.

1b - Feed one small crystal bead through one 4 inches piece of wire and then pass each of the wires through the two holes in the center of filigree petals, cross the wires and pass each ends through opposite holes, and then pass each wire in opposite directions through the hole of the bead.

1c - Cut one side of the wire off flush with the bead hole and then use the large end to wrap around the bottom of the bead. Trim excess wire.

1d – Repeat steps to add 4 more crystals to the other petals.

Making beaded bail

2a. Pass a 3 inches piece of stringing wire through the middle top hole of one filigree petals. String one guava seed beads + one gold seed bead onto stringing wire and repeat the pattern until you have 6 guava seed beads on. Add a small crimp bead and go back with the wire end through to form a beaded circle.

2b. Tighten the circle making sure the crimp is placed in the back of filigree pendant. Use chain nose pliers to flatten the crimp. Trim excess wire and set aside.

Stringing shortest strand. (inside)

3a. String one wire guardian and one crimp tube 2 inches from one end of 20-inch beading wire; insert short strand wire tail through round bottom ring of half portion of toggle and back through crimp tube. Use crimp tool to flatten crimp tube properly and then trim excess wire.

3b. Feed the following components onto stringing wire:

2 bead bumpers + spacer + oval watermelon + spacer + 4mm crystal + spacer + oval watermelon + spacer + 8mm crystal + spacer. Repeat this pattern using only the 8mm crystals beads until you have 6 more oval watermelon glass beads on.

3c. Add one coin pearl + Venetian pebble + oval watermelon. From this point you can symmetrically mirror the other half of necklace.

3d. Finish end of necklace as started.

Stringing longest strand. (outside)

4a. String a wire guardian and one crimp tube 2 inches from one end of 20-inch beading wire; insert short strand wire tail through top bottom ring of half portion of toggle and back through crimp tube. Use crimp tool to flatten crimp tube properly and then trim excess wire.

4b. String the following onto beading wire: two bead bumpers + one spacer + one 4mm bead + one spacer + three bead bumpers + one coin pearl + three bead bumpers. Repeat a pattern of 6 coins separated by only bead bumpers and after the 6^th pearl is on add three bumpers, one spacer, one crystal, one spacer. Repeat the last pattern twice.

4c. After the 18^th pearl is on, add three bead bumpers an then attach filigree pendant through its beaded bail.

4d. Now that you have half of your necklace ready repeat the pattern on reverse to finish the other side.

4e. Attach end of beading wire as you started. Ignore the middle ring of your toggle.

Final lengths : 19 and 18 inches.

Designer’s tips:

1 – If you want to use the middle ring of your toggle, add a duo color strand of same seed beads used on your beaded bail. A third layer will add extra texture to it.

2 - For a dramatic color contrast tries a vivid green seed beads strand…you can always blames on the papaya skin.

3. Dress down: pair with white lace or cotton summer dress, striped leather sandals, big tote and plain hoops.

4. Dress up: white suit with a strapless top underneath, cork and leather stilettos, snake leather bag and a pr of crystal clear long tear drop earrings.

In Knoxville for Jewelry TV and Beadalon

I was back home form Bead and Button on the 13th but not for too long.

I had only few days to finish few projects and then get ready to head to Knoxville, TN, to appear on Jewel School Television.

On Friday, 17th, somehow I missed my early flight and got there in the afternoon. I was welcomed by two wonderful people, got a quick tour (amazing facility) and then my friends Margot and Drew Potter picked me up on my hotel and took me for dinner in the downtown area. We went to a fabulous place in the Market square and we had a great time. I worked on samples on Saturday and the next day I debuted on live TV next to Kim (hostess) and Margot Potter. It was an incredible experience!

Lot's of excitement in the air...meeting old friends and connecting with new ones. The Bead and Button 2011 is gone and my personal highlights were the promo done by Beadalon for my book and "The White Party" thrown by John Bead Corp - the jewelry supplier from Toronto, Canada ( everybody had to dress in white and only that itself to me is a reason to celebrate - it brought me the some of the same vibe of New Year's Eve in Brazil - white is a must to begin the year with good and peaceful vibes).

"Modern Expressions" does Bead and Button Show 2011

Thanks to the efforts of Beadalon, my book "Modern Expressions" had a strong presence during the fantabulous and unique "Bead and Button Show" held last week in Milwaukee.

I was caught by assault when somebody told me that one of the projects from the book was in the show program through a full page advertise posted by Beadalon.

The necklace is called "Spatial Spheres" and features one of my favorites stringing wire of all times made by Beadalon - the 49 Strand .024" white. The back of the design was modified from the original version in the book for the ad - it showcases a nice combo of textured chain sold through Beadalon. Credits to my publisher North Light Books/FW Media were displayed in the ad and it brought lots of people to the booth to check it out. Modular Montana blue crystal beads from SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS assortment added lots of light between rings of wire, pierced metal and acrylic beads.

For an extra touch of glamour I hired a local model to be at the booth on Friday from 2 to 4pm to handle the "purchase free" forms for a random drawing of a copy of the book and a full kit to make "Spatial Spheres". Copies of the book were donated by FWMedia and the free kit is sponsored by Beadalon, SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS and this blogger.

Okay...here is the thing: my friend Lilian, owner of Nature Beads, was all over my pieces and she decided to try many on.

On this picture she is wearing "Back to the future", a necklace made with tubing and inserts bought at a hardware store. Fabulous sterling silver claps were generously donated by Atrbeads.com. Lilian proved me that the necklace was done perfectly. It seemed tailored for her neckline. The secret here is that special Brazilian flair. Worrrrk it !

Oh...and crowning Lilian's head, an iconic piece designed by Katie Hacker..."Silver Splendor"- that design is a staple.

I gladly autographed a complimentary copy of my book, donated generously by FWMedia to the lady above. She purchased Beadalon products beyond the minimum amount and was awarded by my diy jewelry guide. In the background a luscious necklace designed by fellow designer Margot Potter for Beadalon...tons of SE crystal beads and 49 Strand gold-plated Beadalon wire rings. One of my favorites by Madge.

A front overview of Beadalon's booth and the station created for my book...loaded with some of the projects for the book, a rejected necklace originally designed for the book (on the black neck display - made with rubi and pink tourmaline and a twisted Murano Glass pendant), our ballot for the random drawing and towards to the left side on the front table a fresh and voluptuous necklace created recently by me for John Bead Corp.

I thought I should have something current and trendy so people know that I am still in business...ahahaha. The necklace will have its own story...it's fun, out of the box and very haute couture... it deserves a post by itself...but the major reason for been with me during the show was because I used Elasticity to build the flower beaded rings and many people asked me about it...stretching cord always intrigues people on how to work with it. It has never given me any problem. I love it!

On the corner left, among some of my designs is the winner of the Katiedids contest...Lilian Chen designed an ultra modern and voluptuous necklace loaded with Katiedids and SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS....final result: she won first place. Clever application of the components created by fellow designer Katie Hacker exclusively for Beadalon.

The lady above with that big smile was at our booth watching Wyatt's demo and decided t stick around...she end uo buying tons of Beadalon products at the show and came back to get her copy of "Modern Expressions". What a treat!

The lady with me is from Japan and she purchased Beadalon products during the show to get also her complimentary copy of the book. Signed and personalized by me straight to her heart.

The lady above was the second person who exceeds the minimum purchase number and was entitled to win an autographed copy of "Modern Expressions" as a complimentary gift.

What's going onin my studio right now

The image above tells a little about what I have been working on lately...creating new "in-use" designs for my formidable and visionary Canadian customer. I have been feeling bold and extravagant lately and I am translating that in all the newest jewelry pieces. I want them to be big and serious and I am making little beaded flower rings to start with.

But that is not all..last week was hectic in my studio, and messy...I made 4 pieces and send to Create Your Style with SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS to be considered for some of the activities during the CYS Show in Tucson 2012. I hope to be part of that again.

The necklace below is from a small collection I designed for a Brazilian customer form Sao Paulo. I incorporated stainless steel modern beads with SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS on two of my favorites colors at this moment, and a touch of organza ribbon to make it more feminine and French-patisserieesque.

FREE FRIDAY PROJECT

Today is "April's fool" but this post is not a prank. lol
I am bringing back to you "free instructions" of one of my favorite necklaces designed awhile back for Beadalon.

It is casual, fun, colorful, easy to make it and it highlights the 19 Strands Beadalon colored stringing wire and SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS. The coolest thing about this design is that you can easily create your own version with the latest new colors by SE . Also, you can make it more trendy replacing the stringing wire colors and add SE crystal butterfly beads (10mm) to each of the strands of wire or alternated with some of your favorite metal charms.

Here are 2 different ways of make it more current and trendy:

To celebrate an early Spring season.
Replace the color of Beadalon "black" velour tubing with "tan".

For a soft blueish pallete:
Use only 19 Strands .018' green stringing wire, replace bead caps and crimp tubes with silver antique metal finishing and mix the following SE crystal beads: Caribbean Blue opal, Pacific Opal, Erinite, Light Azore and Sand Opal.

For a pinkish palette go with:
Use only 19 Strands Beadalon pink stringing wire, replace bead caps and crimping tubes with any antique green metal finishing and mix the following SE crystal colors: Vintage Rose, Rosa Water Opal, Violet Opal, Cyclamen Opal and Light Grey opal.

Please, read the instructions before you start assembling your pierce. I usually do not have a "pattern" of writing instructions. I like to start assembling necklaces from the middle towards to the back and I know for sure that is not the way most magazine and book editors like to do it.

• Tools: Beadalon Designer Flush Cutter
Beadalon Designer Chain-nose pliers

Instructions:

1. Cut 8 10 inches lenghts each of red and purple wires. Set them aside. Slip a piece of red wire all the way into the end of the Sbeady™ needle using the open portion to guide the wire into the hole.

2. Find the center of the velour tubing and pierce the tubing with the Sbeady wire needle. Use chain-nose pliers to pull the needle though the tube, leaving aproximately 4 inches of wire below the tubing.

3. Use crimp tube #2 to crimp the short side of the red wire against the velour tubing, string a 6mm bicone padparadscha onto the short wire + crimp tube #2 and crimp it. Cover the crimp with a 3mm round crimp cover so the crimp doesn't scratch your neck. trim excess wire.

4. Randomly start feeding 4 or 5 bicone crystal beads to bottom wire alternated by a single crimp tube onto the red wire. Beads are held in place with #2 crimp tubes on down side. Eyeball the space between the beads according to your peference. The exposed sctions of the stringing wire will look more dramatic if you choose beads with colors that contrast with wire color.

5. Eye ball the next place to pierce the next wire using Sbeady needle. Do not leave more than 1/4 inch betwen the strands. Alternate red and purple wires to make it more interesting. (of course, if you decied to use a single color of wire skeep that! lol)
String each strand separately using a random pattern. To achieve a similar look follow graduation pattern from small to large size beads. You will have 10 strands ending with 8mm beads and 8 others with 6mm beads.

6. Attach stainless steel claw end clasp to both sides of tubing using flat nose pliers or mighty crimper to close claws around velour tubing. Enjoy it!

"Bead Extravaganza" weekend @ John Bead Corporation

For the second time, I was in Toronto for a weekend of "Bead Extravaganza" hosted by John Bead Corporation. Their showroom has been improved since the last time I was there. I liked the new set up and it looks extremely inviting to any hobbyist or jewelry designer who wants to spend hours going through aisles and aisles of an incredible do-it- yourself arsenal.

The event itself was very well attended and the attendees were interested in learning all about the newest products. It's uplifting to witness the growth of this type of event.

Beadalon sent Wyatt White and this blogger to handle non-stop demonstrations highlighting some of their newest products. Swarovski North America was represented by Vince Scalera and Nick Regine. Vince introduced the new Innovations Spring/Summer 2012 to their customers and Nick Regine handled demos using crystal chattons and clay, plus a nice glance on how to apply crystal fabric onto design endeavors.

Pam Arion with Tierra Cast introduced the new line "Metamorphosis" and hosted make and takes all day long. On top of that, John Bead had Stephanie Dixon, SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS Ambassador and fellow designer creating fabulous neckpices featuring their new line of feathers combined with crystals. A very "couture" Dixon's chick design moment.

The whole staff at John Bead worked hard to make those days as plesant as possible for their customers and vendors.

Following are some hot flashes of the "Extravagannnnza". Get ready because it was two days of DIY insanity in Toronto. lol

Tierra Cast dared to compete with Beadalon to see who would gather more people...well, I think she might had the advantage of "make and take"... because we all know how much we all love treats...I am watching you, Pam , the newest Miss Con ge ni aaaaaa li ty on earrrrrrth!

Canadian designer...yes (huahuahu....just kiddinng) - fellow designer and SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS Ambassador Stephanie Dixon making her magic inside of the SE lounge. She always puts a warm smile on to welcome you to the world of crystallizing with SE.

Nick Regine and some of his "groupies" loading him with sparkling questions...next to him you can see the cover of "Crystal Chic" by Debbi Simon, anoooooother designer and fellow SE ambassador- her book is fabulous and show you how to add pizzazz to everything you can imagine using SE components, of course!

OMG, if wasn't enouuugh already, anotherrrrr Canadian designer on the run to stardom, and honey let me tell you, crystal addicted Miss Denny Diamond was literally on a mission...this woman was inside of the SE lounge for more than 2 hours...she shopped until dawn...lol

Thank God, she had a short time to pose for this blogger.

"Lush couture" by Stephanie Dixon...as you can see, she had Swarovski crystals all overrrrrrr...because you know, we don't do less...we were born for the "more is more".

On this picture an overview of the fabulous SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS lounge inside of John Bead show roon in Toronto. What I like the most (besides the crystals) was all the "Trend's flags"exposed up on the wall framing the entire crystal square. Great way to share with their customers how the collections are presented to the distributors and potential buyers. Maybe 2 or 3 manequins with runway pieces would add an extra drama. J'adore!

I haaaaate those side pictures taken of me..not a good angle at all, but people aree insisting on taking it. I wish I had a publicist to control all that..and a good layear just in case somebody misbe have. I this meantime I have to let it go but I do believe that bad angles should be seen only at home. Anyway, I had to show you that my station also was rocking the house. lol

I have to say that was really nice to spread the freshness of my new book to the Canadians who were all over it. A few copies of the book were sold and signed.

All of the vendors had signs like the one seen above made by JB staff on their stations. Me liked it!

On the left, 3 bracelets made by the newest designer in town, ( yep...anooother one - you know these days everybody wants to be a designer!!! It's amaaaazing. How many designers the market can handle? tell me?!? and this one already started with a very, very strong logo...imagine that?! a double "W"...isn't that too much!?!

Getting back to the caption, on the right, one of my humble creations featuring Tierra Cast charms and Katie did's.

Now it's all about me: above, me in sepia effect - to make it more timeless.

On the picture above 3 of the hottest elements at John Bead's show room. On the left edge you cannot see but there is a fantabulous coffe machine and I had the most delicious coffees in town,everrr. I had like 3 to 4 a day...the double expresso is fantastic!

In the middle of the picture is a armoire-show case filled with jewelry pieces made by me exclusively for John Bead. Well, most of them are pretty cool and had something unique... no, not all of them because dahling, it's impossible to score 10 all the time...even Pavarotti went off tune, hello!!!

So, as I was saying, I was mesmerized by the collection made by me and people were druling all over - seen it all together is very different than seen them one by one. It was great to see the versatility of my work.

I do believe that they should have one (small ones...lol) for all the other fellow designers wjo's been creating pieces for them over the years, as well.

On the right side of the picture, it's a wall dedicated to the newest products and I was smart enough to bring home some of the hottest products like huge jump rings, ubber cool chains, fabulous new Czech glass beads and feathers..did I say feathers? No, I did not! I did skeep the wire...I don't need that! lol

Another one of my humble demo pieces made for JB....a simple 'Y" necklace...another necklace??? why!?!

Under the influence of the proximity of the moon above my window, I took several shots last night of my inspirational guide. Free Friday Project

My fellow jewelry designer Candie Cooper went to her local Hobby Lobby last Wednesday and took the picture bellow. There is a big poster advertising "Modern Expressions" on both entrances to the store and copies of the books are displayed on top shelves. I was thrilled with that, and I told her that I actually had not seen my book in the shelves yet.
I will be posting free step by step projects every Friday and I'd like to begin with a project of a pair of earrings featured in the book. This highlight of this design is an unexpected use of velour tubing and Quick Links. I mixed gemstones, fresh water pearls and dichroic glass beads but you can use any beads you want.

Parquet Earrings

Material:

2 7x9mm amethyst faceted tear drops

2 dichroic blue with silver chips cube beads

2 dichroic blue with silver chips tube beads

10 8mm light grey fresh water baroque pearls

16 12/0 gold-lustered hexagon delica seed beads

4pcs 1¾ “ black velour tubing

4 silver plated square diamond cut Quick links™

1 pr silver plated back loop ear wire

2 9mm silver plated jump rings

8 4mm silver plated jump rings

2 silver plated jump rings

10 silver plated 2” head pins

4” silver plated 24 gauge German style wire

Tools:

flush cutter

chain nose pliers

round nose pliers

Instructions:

1. Cut a 3" lengths of German style. Make a drop with this wire and an amethyst briolette. String a dichroic tube and 5 seed beads onto it and make simple loop at the end and trim excess wire.

2. Slide a pearl onto a head pin, make a wrapped loop and trim the excess wire. Attach a 4mm jump ring to wrapped loop and close it gently. Reepat this step 3 more times to cerate four pearl drops.

3. Slide a pearl, a dichroic cube and 5 seed beads onto a head pin. Make a simple loop at the end and trim the excess wire.

4. Using flush cutters, cut one of the corners of a quick link. Cut about 1/8” (3mm) of metal on each side of the corner to remove the entire corner from the link. Repeat this with a second quick link.

5. Cut four pieces of velour tubing , each measuring 1 3/4 (4.5cm). Slide a piece of tubing onto the cut end of a quick link piece so that it covers the cut-out corner of the link. Repet this step with other cut quick link.

6. Open a 9mm jump ring and slide on the following: pearl drop + amethyst/dichroic tube drop + pearl drop + quick link (metal side). Before closing the jump ring, slip the 2nd quick link (tubing side) into the jump ring. Close the jump ring gently.

7. Open 6mm jump ring and slide the following: pearl drop + pearl/dichroic cube drop + pearl drop. Before closing, attach this jump ring to the top quick link (metal side).

8. Open a 4mm jump ring and slide on an ear wire. Attach the 4mm jump ring to the 6mm jump ring. Repeat steps 1-8 to make a 2nd earring.

In fashion jewelry the strong look from last year that explores lots of shades of black diamonds, chocolate diamonds, off-white, greige and silver shade will stick for another long season. Retailers of finished jewelry had tons of pieces featuring those colors. My fellow designer and friend Katie Hacker wrote a post on her blog about this trend, perfect for the woman who leaves the house in the morning to work and has to attend a cocktail party in the evening and has no time to go back home for change.

As far as "new" gemstones and fabulous new colors, I had not seen nothing special but the texture in the stones is explored to the top because popular stones like "agate" and "black onix" is invading the market dressed in "matte" finishing - so expect to see lots of cool shapes of matte/frosted black onyx and agate . The "cathedral cut" will be seen more often.( stones with frosted surfaces enhanced by sections of shiny design element).

I would pick the "rutilated quartz" as the stone of the season. A large variety of colors was a must have item on almost all gemstone dealer booths. Strong, full of natural flaws and most of them mined in my rich Brazil. On the high end jewelry Brazilian Imperial Topaz will be used by many custom jewelry designers.

We will be seen lots of multicolored stones, filled with several stripes or hues of colors, and the epitome of that is the "rainbow calcilica".

I found this stone two years ago and bought a few fat briolettes to make a project for "Modern Expressions" but unfortunately my design did not make the final cut for the book. It did look very Southwestern and did not match the book's concept at all.

Beading world

I definitely can say that filigree metallic beads is coming back stroooooong this season and it will stick for at least 3 years. It's the return of the Earlie's 2000's "Bali" bead style look.

Lots of details on a single bead. Lots of them will come from China and the best one swill be the ones handmade in India, Indonesia and Netherlands.

Gorgeous floral designs, very art ooveau and few touches of art deco revival.

On that same category a "Moroccan" mood is coming also very strong and with that the "nomad"-"gypsy" style will rock the streets. Lots of details on top of a single color serving as background, some of the beads are made of ceramic and metal components like rings, drops and trims are glued onto, and then little flat back stones will add an extra glam.

I personally loved it but you must be careful when designing with them...my tip is to use few ones and build your inspiration around those.

You can also make a full necklace with a single style and complete the back with a textured ribbon.

I 've made a sample during my demo times at the Beadalon booth and I used two fabulous new stones from John Bead Corporation and you can see on the picture down below. Delicious look!

Metal Components

Chain is the key in 70% of all the most intriguing jewelry designs I've seen in the most recent fashion centers I 've visited. Shopping windows of Florence, Rome, New York, Sao Paulo and London have been showcasing many jewelry pieces made with chain. Bracelets and twisted or intertwined necklaces have chain as their main component. Chain is a staple in the making jewelry world and it will stay on this position for awhile.

With that said, expect to see lots of "matte" chain taking over the fashion scene and wait to see some of the "sparkling" chain that will hit the market soon. Shades of white, black, gold, silver, and the "weathered finishing (the newest terminology used ny fashion editor for "antique" finishing) will take over. Antique finishing has been seen at the jewelry shows for the last 2 years but now new "shades" of antique are coming and they all look fierce. Greenish patina, blue, green gold, copper will join the traditional gold and silver metallic. Gun metal, hematite and graffiti will also fight for the popularity among consumers.

In Italy and Brazil, gold chain has been strong in fashion jewelry but some experts do not think that will take over. Fashion magazines are showing lots of jewelry in gold but if you like it as much as I do opt for "matte" gold to make it more IN.

I personally will stick with shiny metals and will add some of those antique finishings for the bread and butter pieces.

Dahling, at the end, glamour matches with opulence, brilliance and the wealthy factor of gold, and remember Cleopatra is very IN these days, and she knows.

Fun Jewelry

Well, the title says it all...it's a carnival parade of elements and media...use all you think can be used on your jewelry creations...cork, paper, recyclable, acrylic, glass, natural fibers, stones, textile...eeesssshhhhh....there is not only one single direction on fashion and trends these days...all is possible...rules are made to be broken so dis consider all the above and be yourself because at the end, dahhling, style is more important than fashion.

Following below is a board with items that I will be working on my next design creations. On the next post I will give more details about some of them. A few of them were bought at a flea marketlast November in Florence and @ the Craft Hobby Stitch Show in Birmingham-UK last week.

On the bottom left many of the jewelry components are from John Bead Corporation latest collections...pewter findingss, textured solid circles, "icy" glass beads made in Czech Republic and the first "Moroccan" style beads chosen by me out of their website back in early January.

In the center you can see a necklace I created with them using Artistic Wire in 3 different colors and SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS on shades coordinated with the accents of the focal beads it selves. All the comments made by attendees and friends at the Beadalon's booth were incredibly positive about that necklace...I love to create new pieces at the "moment" of the demos. I feel more liberated, happier and empowered when I have to create without filters.

After talking with my friend Katie Hacker (sidebar link) over the phone yesterday afternoon, I've realized that I had not make any design recently suitable for Valentine's Day. I mean, I had not designed a Valentine's Day inspired piece for my own signature line.

I did make two fabulous designs (I actually had might designed 3 pieces) inspired by Valentine's for John Bead Corp but I did not want to re-post designs that have recently featured on this blog.

Back to the main reason of this post, during my conversation with beading diva and TV hostess Katie Hacker I remembered that I bought a pair of high end turquoise donut hearts 2 years ago, when I visited IGM in California...just perfect for the occasion.

The goood thing is that turquoise is such timeless gemstone and nothing better to step into the Spring with a fabulous and deep shade of blue.

Following fashion tendencies right now I mixed 2 metal shades, added texture and created a very sexy pair of earrings styled in the picture below coordinating with several strands of white gemstones - agate nuggets, faceted howlite and white coral....for an extra pizazz a delicate matte gold-plated heart chain by John Bead Corp. was wrapped around the triple strand necklace. Check your self and tell me what you think.

Demo and workshop for CYS with SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS Show:

Well, let's say that this year lots of things were different during my regular events. I was supposed to be demoing the fabulous jewelry pieces in the above picture on Monday the Feb, 1st but for some reason I totally missed my date and I was at the CYS Show taking a class on riveting with Nick Regine, instead of been at the lobby doing my demo.
Luckily, I was able to finally do my demo on Wednesday, 2nd.
The earrings are totally cool and airy, and after learned with Wyatt White on making rings using Artistic Wire I was able to shape a single cosmic triangle stone onto a modern cocktail ring...very "Modern Expressions".

Bracelets created by me for my CYS with SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS workshop. Fun, trendy, unique and intricate but seems like it did not appeal to the attendees at all.

Above is the lady who lonely attended to my workshop. She loved it because all my time was dedicated to her. She was making the bracelet to give as a gift to her grand daughter but left the class wearing it.

As far as the workshop itself, I will offer it on my Summer workshops. I love the piece and believe on its potential, besides it's haute couture darling!

Impossible to score all the time. It's real life!

I did not have my camera with me this year during my events in Tucson.

Once again, we wre there for 8 days and the weather thisyear was surreal...cold, windy and cold again.

Katie Hacker and Craig Brown surprised me with a fabulous mustard scarf and was my saving grace because I did not have any heavy coat with me...so I was able to pass by the gelid days wearing a sweater and my mustard scarf that I paired a couple of times with my mustard pants.

Above, Katie Hacker and I arriving at the place to be on Wednesday, Feb 2nd in Tucson. A celebration bash promoted by John Bead Corporation. The party was upbeat and the vibe was incredibly fun. The massive presence of the SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS ambassadors added an extra pound of sparkles to the already stellar night.

Brianna, a JB associate, wearing a neckpiece designed by me for John Bead. Strands of leather held by SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS cosmic stones...simple but unexpected. I was inspired by one of the latest Roberto Cavalli runway shows. It was really cool having someone so young and upfront to wear it so I can retouch the concept and expand the styling options.

My appearance at CHA inter Show in Los Angeles this year a was fast and furious.

I was literally there just for 3 events and did not have time to walk the floor and check out what's was going on.

Below are shots from my book signing events and a jewelry contest hosted by Margot Potter and I at the F+W Media booth.

A big surprise by Harper's Bazaar

Firstly, I'd like to apologize my readers for been away from this space since last year. My holiday season was very strange..for good and for bad...I wasn't feeling very creative, and although I had so many things to say about 2010 I felt like the moment wasn't right.
I have been occupied organizing my upcoming trips to trade shows, workshops, demos and book signings for my book and a schedule with my upcoming events will be posted soon.

Now, let's begin the new year with big news.

"Modern Expressions" hitting the shelves soon

I am very anxious about seeing my books on the shelves of major bookstores soon. Some websites are promising to ship the book on December 20th and with that, lots of questions keeping pile up the back of my head. I want to know what would be my friends first impressions, magazine editors and of course the general public. Will friends be honest?

I have been relying on online reviews as a guide when I start thinking about buying a new electronic, booking a hotel, going to a new restaurant or bar. There is a lot of anxiety on my side on how my work will be seen by readers from all over. Am I ready for the downs, if they come?!

I have been always very sensitive to negative comments about my jewelry line that at the end I take all personal, and it's very difficult not taking a negative comment about something made by you as personal, because there are lots of time and love involved on creating - even a commercial work.

Surely, there is no other way to learn all about those doubts if you don't put yourself out there and just let it happen when it is supposed to happen.

And talking about rejection, here are a few of the designs that were rejected or better saying, were not selected to be part of the book, because they did not look like they were made by the same designer who made all the other designs chosen to be on Modern Express. A book needs to show coherence like all designs might to be linked to your book concept.

Above, a necklace that combines dyed shell, yellow and red tiger-eye, turquoise, 3 different shapes of leaf charms, chain (of course) and very cool metal beads. It's simple and the inside asymmetrical strand reflects a trend that is very stron now; I have been doing asymmetrical designs since the begining...great 2 see all over the place. I have not done anything with this design and have not changed a thing about it. I like it and it'll probably be sold on of these days. I added a double strand of green faux-suede cord in the back.

Above, a bold triple layered design made of black brass links and lots of crystals by SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS. I mixed jet and crystal red magma large holes roundelles- Article 5040, sew-on leaf stones and polygon crystal silver shade beads. Black filigree metal beads and black acrylic rectangle links adds texture to it.

I like to work with interesting findings because to me that's what DIY should always be. Making yourself something fabulous, easy and fast. Two sections are detachable so it can be worn just as a "Y" shape necklace/lariat. Fun, edgy, trendy and still screaming my name. I have not done any change to this piece either.

Last one, is a casual-chic necklace that takes me to the girls from streets of Rio- it's a typical girl from Ipanema casual necklace. Leather combined with textile, natural seed and stone (a bold single carnelian). It's architectural and basic. It's a great accessory to complement that jeans, t-shirt and hells combo. Here is the thing: this is the only one that I will change a little. The knots made with sparkling thread should be bigger. I will re-do it using more of those with more volume. I personally did not like the result throughout the leather strand, but love the whole look and colors.

Yes, I do love my creations.

Did you know that the cover design of "Modern Expressions" was rejected twice buy two magazine editors? And then I did not change a thing about the design at all. Whatever is supposed to be it will be, regardless the odds.

Italian Fashion 1

The windows in Italy keep the fashion industry incredibly diverse and remains an endless source for inspiration and current trends. However it seems impossible to pick juts one trend of the season because nowadays plastic occupies the same space as metal and stones.

Dogmania charms made of acrylic. Loved the bracelets with few but big charms.

This green group above is very cool..art deco lines.

Two last pictures were taken in Rome and the store is located at Via Veneto. Outrageous dress and shoes. Over the top and fabulous!

A quick glance on "Modern Expressions", the book

I am very excited about getting an advance copy of my book "Modern Expressions - creating fabulous and fashionable jewelry with easy-to-find elements" published by North Light books, a imprint of FW Media, by tomorrow.

This project has been my baby for the last 14 months and now that is a reality, I feel like another journey begins.

Appearances, workshops, book signings and more will rely on my ability to find the right venues so the promotion can be done right. I have already talked with different businees partners and I am glad that there is a good network of people and companies that are willing to jin me to turn this book into a success.

On our last trip to Mexico City, we were invited to a series of events organized by our fellow jewelry designer and friend Daniel Espinosa. In the agenda: the opening of a new store and the launching of his new collection.

The only event we missed was a runway show but I captured many moments of style outside of the catwalk what is even better to take a look of what people is actually wearing it.

The ensemble this lady is wearing might be my one of my favorites of the night. The combo of braided gold silk cord, white pearls and gold metal accents is fun. She looks incredible! It's great to see cocktail ring, bold earrings and luscious lariat all playing in the field together. No minimalism at all! it works and I love it!

On this photo, the beauty of the model disputes the spotlight with the beauty of the jewelry. Peach sahdes on rose gold over sterling silver. Astonishing set of jewels.

Mexican TV actress Ingrid Coronado is a huge Daniel Espinosa fan and couldn't miss the launching of the new collection at the Four Seasons for nothing - and she dragged a crowd of paparazzi with her. The dress is very DVF and the bracelet belong to Daniel Espinosa "Infinity" collection - whimsical and sparkly.

Two DE franchisers and this blogger. The ladies are fun and fierce.

The lady in the last picture was bejeweled from head to toe and I loved it. Although she's wearing many items, each one belongs to the same style and color palette and she definitely plays "more is more". She is the dream of any jewelry designer.

Swarovski Ambassador Training

Many times writing for a blog obligates you to be current as much as possible...I like to be current and fresh when I can make that a spontaneous and gratifying act. My career is not well disciplined and I don't manage my time very well. I was in Brazil for a month, from end of August to almost end of September dealing with personal issues and little bit of work.

I got back one day and the next day I flew to Cranston-Rhode Island to be part of the Swarovski Ambassador Training. After I got back I had to dedicate all my time to finish new designs for a customer and, two weeks after that, I was in Mexico City working for a manufacturer. So time went by so fast that I did not manage to blog from the road and add all the news from Swarovski earlier on this space, and that's why I am doing it just now.

The CREATE YOUR STYLE with SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS division was launching the Innovations for Autumn/Winter 2011/12. It was a fabulous event! A group f designers got together for the first time to bond and to talk about trends, new ideas, projects and goals. The Swarovski team treated us like family and we all felt really good about our partnership with Swarovski through the CREATE YOUR STYLE division.

I personally feel honored by having one of the most luxurious brands in the world sponsoring my design projects and endorsing my creative vision.

As fars as the products, the new shapes of beads stones, pendants and more and more, and the new colors pleased a lot my personal aesthetic.

I am a huge fan of yellow and smoky shades, so the new "Crystal silver night" and "Sunflower" gave me plenty of inspirations.

For some reason I made a small board with names of world celebrities that those two new colors remind me of and I came up with those. It's not important if in real life those colors are not appealing to them, but it's exciting for my creative process that those colors takes me to that world of beauty, glamour and stardom that those ladies exudes when walking the red carpet. This is Swarovski on its roots.

Many of the new shapes are extremely cool but here are my favorites (among the sample I got it) : lol

The ethereal existence of a butterfly now translated into a incredible and deep stone...joining the family of pendants and beads.

It can't getter more Irish than this one...an universal symbol of luck, we Latins love it! Can't wait for bigger sizes so the cuts can be really noticed.

Hexagon sew-on stone - another modern and somehow futuristic.

Lucerna bead - soon it's going to be in the list of favorites of may designers. Amazing cut and substantial. Architecturally modern.

Sphinx eye stone. wow...sexy, misterious and intriguing...it's time to start setting stones.

Inspirational Fall

After almost 12 years living in American soil, I am still allured by the beauty of Fall colors and at same time perplexed that this season they are almost gone.

Digging my trunk , I've found two "vintage" pieces made years ago when I was taking chances on my first wire wrapping loops - they weren't so great but I was pleased with the color palette that inspired me. The absence of red on both pieces made me wonder what I was thinking.

One piece was knotted using # 2 carded silk because the multi-colored tourmalines were sized from 2.5 to 3mm. Both designs feature nice colored gemstones that were probably mined in the beautiful and tropical Brazil (my Brasil).

Lots of citrine, peridot, smokey quartz, lemon quartz, lemon citrine and gold rutilated quartz. Metals are vermeil, gold plated and even brass plated...all mixed together.

I came back from Mexico in a such golden mood and since then I have been creating lots of new designs exploring metallic combo and sometimes spotlighting a single mettalic color as well like on this necklace below.

I love the styleof this chain. It has a classic and substantial look that takes me back to old Hollywood glamour.
I wish I had big vintage pearls to add to the composition but I decided to use crystal red magma SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS large Twsite Sew-on Stone and carnelian links. The chain itself is the focal point so I did not want to do much. I wanted a statement piece, strong, retro and feminine.
I glued some jet crystals chattons for an extra pizazz. Garlan Chain Company has an extensive line of chain, in many styles, sizes and plating can be done as the customer want. Unfortunately the company onle sells to wholesalers and distributors but you can always find it through the best jewelry findings suppliers around the country.

Second picture shows the necklace on a mannequin...great accessory for any Fall/Winter outfit.

It pairs well with a head to toe black outfit, or a chocolate brown and others dark earthy shades. Actually caramel would make it very chic as well.

Pick small earrings and add a stack of antique gold bangles.

I have been developing a business relationship with John Bead Corp. from Canada for almost 3 years. We've meet during one of the CHA Shows when I was working at the Beadalon booth. Luckily our relationship has grown and after almost 2 years I finally started creating designs for them extending it to a partnership...I am basically creating samples pieces featuring most of their fabulous and well assorted line of jewelry supplies.

I have had the chance to visit with Wyatt their headquarters in Toronto and we both were mesmerized by the size of it and by the warmth reception we had. I think that works with nice people is half way of a successful result.

Those designs will be featured at some point on the "design gallery" on their website www.johnbead.com and eventually in other medias.

I made a selection of my favorite ones to showcase not only my artmanship but the incredible selection of jewelry components that can be found in the market but many people don't know. I serious did not know about them away back and it's always important to have great sources that enable designers and hobbyists to turn into reality their inspirations.

And the best of all is that the design on the cover of my upcoming book showcases findings in sterling silver by them and is structured by more fabulous products that became a must have on my designer table - stringing wire, wire guardians™, bead bumpers™ and the fabulous and versatile polyester chain by Beadalon - the source for the high tech components ever...the first source.

"Azzuro" - exploring textures in shades of blues and focusing on a large slice of agate as a pendant.

"Nine drops"- club time - a hip and young piece using lots of chain( not, not me?!) and an unusual color combo. Padparadscha SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS adds light and edginess.

"Iced branches" - simplicity of lines showcasing large bugle beads and SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS STAR BEADS. Silver and light gold to cheer up the upcoming season.

"Tranquine"- I explored a technique Wyatt taught me recently and I played with sizes and dimensions of Czech peacock beads accented by pink silk knots. Tierra Cast rings hold the fairly heavy piece together.

"Forest nymph" - actually always romantic on my design daily basis but we must be all in one...I found those filigree leaves at the JB showroom and couldn't let them go...a attach crystals and turquoise beads using silk and connected all leaves using resign links.

"Pearl vine" - circles of multicolored pearls inter wined together...SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS Cubes Beads break a little the circle mood. Frosted or white matte chain adds lightness to it.

"Victoria-regia"- named fater a huge Amazonian water Lilly this piece don't look like the flower itself but it's equally luscious and eye catching. Czech peacock dagger beads or drops are the highlight...I mixed blue and green and use #* carded silk blue with green beads and vice-versa...just to make it more intricate..technique is similar to the one used on "Tranquine". Tierra Cast oval hammered links brings fun and artsy to the bush like section.

"Big love" - Well, life will not be complete without an entire piece highlighting SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS - on this piece lots of sparkles mixing Crystal Red Magma large hole Roundelles and large Heart Pendant, Siam Flower Pendants, and hues of Indian Pink and Crystal Silver Shade.

What's going on in Brazil in the jewelry world

Summer in Brazil is just on the corner and an explosion of colors can be found everywhere.

Street wear jewelry in Brazil has been influenced by sewing, weaving and gluing of fabrics onto stones an dot metal components. Lots of hand crafted techniques have been used to create many styles of necklaces made with stripes of fabric. Also ribbons are playing major part on focal points since they've been used to create flowers that sets asymmetrically on the neckline.

Here are some pics I took of few pieces that caught my eyes.

Both pictures above were taken at a mall in Sao Paulo and this store has the coolest and trendiest items.

The last two pictures above are showing pieces I bought on the streets of Brasilia, that is my hometown. Simple but beautiful and inspiring pieces made by hands of talented people. What I like the most is the solution they create to add style and make it work. It's casual, fun and vibrant.

Creating with Swarovski Elements

After been in Rhode Island at the Swarovski North America headquarters for a meeting and training with some of fellow Ambassadors, I brought home with me many beautiful Swarovski Elements and few of them were used on this design. I created this set of necklace and earrings - that not necessarily needs to be worn together - made with cosmic circle stone on a new ceramic color and a fabulous flat stone butterfly. I used a gun metal filigree leaf pendant as the focal point but lots is happening before it gets to the center of the necklace. First, I strung Indian Red and Indian Pink bicones (Article 5328) onto silver plated ear hoops by Beadalon to create beaded circles, and then I cover a section of a cosmic ceramic circle stone with cotton crystal copper yarn. Cosmic ceramic pendants were added to bring more of that same shade and texture to the design.

The connections were made using brass grey oval links and a finished off with an off-white frosted chain by John Bead Corporation - one of the largest jewelry suppliers from Canada.

To add a different element I've decided to create two separate strands of beads knotted on #8 copper carded silk and weave it through the links once they were together.

I was in Brazil for a month and got back last week and flew the next day to the
Swarovski HQ in Cranston -Rhode Island for two days of Ambassadors meeting and training. I have lots of info to share and soon new designs.
For now a gorgeous picture taken in Brazil and a bracelet freshly made just to practice "putting" components together. More to come soon.

Above a typical flower grown on the Brazilian savanna - does great in hot, dry and arid environments stands out as the main flower that symbolizes the area where Brasilia was built, in Portuguese is called "cerrado".

I was practicing a little last night and made this bracelet - birds flying away from the coming cold days - bye bye spring!

My latest addiction: Czech peacock glass beads

I am lately working a lot with peacock glass beads made in Czech Republic. ..when I spotted them for the first time I was beginning to create designs for my upcoming book titled: "Modern Expressions - creating fabulous and fashionable jewelry with easy-to-find elements"by North Light Books , and coincidentally I was searching for different components..not necessarily new but different...those beads were different and fresh so the distributor in Canada kindly supplied me with a nice variety and I created a design for my book. Sad thing is that I did not explore the whole potential of those beads because now I have been creating designs for the same distributor and lots of exciting pieces have born from my studio table. After I got my samples new shapes, colors and effect was released and by the time my book is out I am sure they will be all over the place.

The best quality comes with the ones made in Czech Republic and they are top notch. It's all about shyness, interesting prints and cool shapes - many of the prints resemble vintage/geometric old school design staples and that what makes them hot.

I can't resist and hold it back anymore so I am showing you a pair of earrings that I made for John Bead Corporation using one of the latest shape called "dagger"...it's fantabulous, it's inspirational and open many possibilities of happines designing.

Check for yourself the picture belo...and least but not last a nice addition to this design was the connectors used by me by Tierra Cast - first time everrrrrrr using findings from them (althoug we ve been dating for a while...lol) and my goal was to give a new interpretation for them...here I used it to add contour and air to the whole sexy look of the dangling earrings...to me is ultimately DALICIUUS !

Hoops for August

My first post of the month is dedicated to my mom...who loves earrings and cannot leave the house withou wearing a pair of them.

Like many women under Leo zodiac sign, her jewelry needs to stand out and catch many glances as possible like the rays of Sun. Although not a big fan of beads she has learned through my designs to appreciate them...so here are some of my "hoops" made with her in mind.

Gold filled hoops with gold plated charms and chain.

14 ky gold filled hoops with peridot and fresh water pearls.

14 ky gold filled, ruby and cherry chalcedony briolettes.

Gold plated flat circles wrapped with colored wire and Swarovski yarn, lemon citrine and Swarovski crystals. Earrings featured on the book "Earrings, earrings, earrings" by DRG.

14k gold, tanzanite, aquamarine and blue lace agathe.

Sterling silver and peridot beads. Unfinished.

My friend and customer from Dallas wearing a one-of-a-kind chandelier earrings made with faceted carnelian coins, turquoise briolettes and vermeil components. One of my favorites creations ever. Love big and long earrings.

Beyond inspiration

Inspiration can strike you in many different ways but many times I don't rely on inspiration to create my jewelry designs simply because many times I am not inspired by anything at all, neither thinking about anything specifically.

Most of the time I only have in my mind a color palette and everything else born from that deep desire of working and manipulating components on those colors that for some reason are talking to me.

The necklace below was created last year for the latest Beadalon catalog #30 and the initial idea was to showcase the white stringing wire - that actually is one of my favorites among many of the wide range colors available by its brand.

I've detected two fabulous print media that could have been used by me as the original inspirations for this necklace because both- a magazine cover and a product ad - are modern, sleek, vibrant and hip. Check out the 3 following images:

On my design the color white is the main element. On the magazine cover black and white takes the main role. Then on the product ad yellow speaks loud and vibrantly sets the whole mood. All of the 3 images deliver the same color palette and obvious each color was explored with a different intention.

Organic Murano

In the picture above: Organic aquamarine chunks mixed with filigree spacers, Swarovski Elements and Murano glass beads. Non treated Brazilian aquamarine large chips adds a funky and edgier vibe to the refinement and sophistications of crystals and Venetian glass beads.

Two rhodium plated star key rings were used as connectors and it can be found @ Beadalon.

In the last picture above, wood and coconut shell beads are combined with crystals to showcase a Venetian pendant with "millifiore" accents. Crystal circle bail holds focal point in place.

Sexy hoops with Garnet CZ's

The folks from Artbeads.com sent me a couple of fancy cut Cubic Zirconia drops (pendants) and I was waiting for the right moment to make something ultra sexy and feminine with them.

I got several ideas going on. I love fancy cuts and on those situations there is no need to do too much with it because the wow effect is the stone itself.

After months and months storaged inside my secret drawer here it is my design incorporating them into a fun, sassy, sexy and luscious pair of hoops - long and flowing, like I think it should be.

I 've decided to use a wide flat circle disc as a frame for the pendants; I wire wrapped around with spaced and longs wraps using copper Artistic Wire, then I created simple dangles of flat oval garnets to be added to the end of gold filled chain. The focal components are the garnet CZ drops. I love this fan shape cut and it has a little of art deco in it.

Bead and Button 2010 - Beadalon new products application

Playing with findings and new products is always fun if is not done under pressure and that is the recipe for successful use of unexpected products.

Beadalon just came out with a sparkle thread that pushes my boundaries into a more crafty and artsy place. I still was able to add Swarovski Elements and make it something fun and fresh.

Below is the picture of a necklace made by me during my demo hours using the hollow mesh tubing filled with crystal beads and spaced with strands of sparkle thread tied between the beads...triple strand to make it luscious...the sparkle thread worked as spacers keeping the beads in place mimicking cages. A little bit of a "fantasy look" for girlie days.

My second necklace below was structured by gun metal chain and interesting focal beads serving an opaque carnelian off-shape bead turning into a pendant.

I used adhesive squares to glue Swarovski Elements on each side of a Lucite orange bead.

Another new fave of mine appears here again - an off-shape (love those) rich animal print metallic peacock bead by Canadian jewelry supplier John Bead Corporation. have you seen those? If not you should run to the closest bead shop and ask for them...those beads are amazingly fashionable and very versatile. There are many "lines" to select from, I went with one that coordinates better with the other Swarovski crystals I have used - , red magma roundelle, crystal dorado bicones and golden shadow cubist.

This necklace will add pizazz to either a summer or fall outfit, and can be worn on day or nightlight.

Chic, simple and trendy! That is all you need to feel expressively modern and beautiful...but hey don't forget about an upbeat attitude..that is a must have.

Fashion, Forward and Findings

I made a very few pieces during the demo time at the Beadalon booth at Bead and Button 2010 Show last month.
Earrings are the quickest pieces to make it but sometimes I c only make one side and finish the pair once I am back home.
Below are few earrings made using the new very modern ear wires by Beadalon. I am sure lots of them will be sold by other companies down on the road, but once again Beadalon has introduced them to my design world and here are some of my favorite ones.

Above is a large cherry chalcedony drop held by a hinge pinch bail ear wire...if you're looking for instant gratification and don't want to spend any of your precious time wire wrapping nor opening/closing jump rings and needs a new pair of earrings to add pizazz to a new outfit, this is the right ear wire for you. It doesn't require hardly any of your time at all...it's a less than 2 minutes pair of earrings...better than that only online shopping darling! The findings is sleek, modern and perfect to showcase a fat briolette or a long fabulous faceted drop. Shazan!

Oh..I love those...still modern and sleek but on this hoops the ear wire has a back ring. It doesn't interfere on the look of your beads and you can add any combination of components and it will work.

Oval light purple peacock Czech beads by John Bead Corporation are the focal element combined with crystals by Swarovski Elements ...the new baroque pearls are sensational.

I used satin silver bead bumpers against all the wire wrapped loops to add more texture and interest to the design element itself.

On the pair of earrings above, I used a hinge oval ear wire that gives a touch of high end jewelry look to a street wear piece. Swarovski Elements copper octagon pendants (two holes) works as connectors adding movement and sassiness to the milky surface of bamboo coral components. These earrings offer a snap-close feature without the need for an earnut.

Bead and Button flashes

Once again we had a great time at the Bead and Button Show in Milwaukee last week

The show hours are brutal but we can always count on having quality time with fellow designers, friends and customers. Milwaukee always surprises me and this year the highlight in the city was the restaurant at the Intercontinental Hotel - Kilawat - incredible cuisine, ambiance and daliciuus™ food.

Following are some of the other highlights of this trip - food is one of my passions and
it will always have lots of space in my life...to me is art and sometimes some people make comments that are totally unfair about me (gluttonous) and the "passion" about food, but you know, I will not change who I am to please anybody else. So suck it because I don't need this kind of negativity.

Cheers to life and to some of the people who stroke a pose to this blogger!

Okay...this was the beginning of my work week...have had no time for lunch and decided to grab a Vino Volo meal @ the Philly airport. The prosciutto and fig jelly sandwich is daliciuus and I ordered just half and was perfect but the white wine flight was terrible...the three wines were horrible..a Lebanese, a Turkish and a Portuguese one...the one from Portugal was the least bad one. It's in the menu under "Mediterranean whites" and it sounds so beautiful and epic but it's no fun...so Heads up people!

Wyatt White's 6 hours wire wrapping class was a huge success and 90% of the ladies was able to finish their components. Great people and 1derful teacher. Beadalon and Swarovski Elements sponsored it and I assisted. We did have 2 of our best local friends in the class helping us and providing water and cookies. It couldn't be better!

Another great moment of the trip. Wyatt White gave a presentation for the Loosen Bead Society of Milwaukee and it was magnificent. people were interested in learning, very well organized and one of the best groups ever. 100 ladies were eager to learn design tips and tech info about many of the products available by and through Beadalon.

It was a great surprise to meet Brenda at this event. She is a jewelry designer, author and fellow Swarovski Elements Ambassador. It was nice to have the chance to chat a little more since we always juts talk quickly at other social gigs.Her iron work is phenomenal and she definitely is a modern expression of talent from head to toe. Check out her newest book "Vintage Redux" - it's fierce and fabulous!

Well, I was already high on those Pom Martinis and those Tohonians ladies were dripping in seed beads originals. Gorgeous neck pieces and tons of hours of work to get that 3D effect. Unfortunately the badges destroyed our fabulosity...just a little...lol

A little of gemstones

After getting back from JCK, I am ready for Bead and Button but before I hit the road (or the sky) I am showing you a necklace that I created using two of the most popular colored gemstones.

Many jewelry lines will be featuring lots of amethyst for Fall/Winter 2010 collection. Citrine is another great gem that can enhance any Fall outfit. You can go both ways on the earrings here. I choose for a single colour that can be worn separately so it's not too match match. A pair of sterling silver square hoops would also rock on!

Modern Jewelry Made in Brazil

I spent Xmas in Brazil on December of 2008. Before I head to my hometown I spent a week in Sao Paulo, one of my favorites cities in the whole world. It was awesome to be in Brazil during the holiday season after an absence of almost a decade. Among many great things I saw in Sao Paulo that December the one that got all my attention it was a jewelry line I spotted in this fabulous neighborhood called Jardins (gardens).

I went to a street fair with my friend Mauro looking for cool tees and I did find some ultra fashion ones but the most interesting finding was the jewelry line of Maria Clarice. Her pieces are very modern and ubber cool. She started designing jewelry repairing some of her mother's vintage pieces and them she channel her calling for design into jewelry making...then later on she wold be updating old pieces and making them better and contemporary...it was a married between form and functionality.

You might think that I am crazy since more than a year has passed by and I am bringing to you something "old"....but dahhling, let me tell you: her jewelry has one the most important things that a wearable jewelry line needs to have for me...timelessness...considering the economy and the fast pace that we live in nowadays it's great for any woman to buy an accessory today and still be able to wear it 2 years later...Maria Clarice pieces are contemporary and futuristic, casual chic and funk and sometimes whimsical.

Take a look at the few pictures I took of her line at the time (I was authorized by her to do it and she did tell me that her website was under construction) and they look like they were created for her 2010 Summer line. I believe that is almost impossible for anybody to look at a entire designer's line and fall in love for everything but her overall aesthetic and vibe is incredible! I did think her jewelry is very Daliciuus™ to look at it!

So I hope you like as much as I did.

BTW her website is finally up and running and you can check it out and see what's she's been up to. Yes, it's in Portuguese but come on if I made in English you can make in Portuguese as well.

I love the colors of the long necklace and the free form patched leather necklace.

Sometimes I ask myself why I should spotlight another designer's creations but the answer is that I want to share with you what I like, what gets into my eyes and brings me joy and of top of all I believe that beauty doesn't exist by itself. It needs to be seen, it needs to be worshipped, it needs to be talked and it needs to be admired.

A very popular stone

We are starting a new week and I am bringing back a relatively old piece made for my Summer/2009 line because old is new and new is old. There will be always a place for turquoise (Chinese stabilized turquoise) and clear crystals on your accessory box. The background is a sunny and very blue sky.

I created this very subtle necklace inspired of course by Frida Kahlo.

Frida to me is the epitome of everything Mexican...her art was dramatic, colorful, tough and many times morbid but regardless the reasons for such painful art legacy, Frida was a real ambassador of her people and her nation.

To celebrate Cinco de Mayo and the unquestionable importance of its people in our lives I want to spotlight this formidable woman and her colors.

On this piece: carved resin roses, Peruvian hand-painted wood by Great Craft Works™, light amethyst drops, once dyed and now faded cherry chalcedony drops, brass, twisted jump rings made with Artistic Wire®, 19 strands Beadalon® .024' satin silver stringing wire and antique brass heart toggle by John Bead Corp.

Artbeads.com and Copacabana

Last November, the folks of Artbeads.com generously sent me few jewelry components that I requested with the intention of using in some of the designs I was creating for "Modern Expressions".

Unfortunately I ended up using only a fabulous ultra cool sterling silver clasp that I've spotted on their website but a few other components were temporarily forgotten on my fabulous and exciting stash of jewels.

Initially I wanted to create a fabulous and substantial necklace using the shell pendants you are seeing on these sexy pair of earrings.

I loved the etched shells that have been around for awhile and the details of these in particular caught my eyes at Artbeads.com website...they are called blacklip shell wavy pendant black cross stitch)...whooof

I have to say that they were not what I was expecting simply because they are light weight. I am terrible figuring certain things out through websites, like measurements, sizes, thickness..serious!
I am one of those people who like to touch things, to see close by.

Well, it came the day that I decided that I could do something else with them because they are still very pretty and here they are. I create a sassy design incorporating both colors.

I only requested one of each of the colors I picked, so why not to make a pair of earrings with both... Below is the image of my sexy, summerish, "Copacabana nights" earrings.

Because I got black motifs in one shell and orange/rusty in the other one, I decided to keep its mood and I am betting on black/red and black/white for Summer strongly.
So I mixed them with gun metal star charms, Indian red, jet and greige Swarovski Elements and red aluminum chain.
If you are wondering how I turn both shells into double hole pendants the answer is : I used glue on bails from Beadalon attached with Bead Fix adhesive square in the back (my new thing...I am so dig in it ).

The necklace is from my own collection...it was designed quite time ago and it features 14ky gold chain and ruby, cherry chalcedony and sunstones briolettes. It doesn't match the earrings but I think coordinates very well...besides I have always been a huge fan o mixing metal colors...and these days it's so IN.

I don't think I need to tell you that now I love those shells and I am glad that I asked the folks of Artbeads.com to send it to me. I did not use for what I intent for at first sign but they do made my earrings inspiration fabulous and fresh..and you know..they do remind me of Copacabana and the mermaids from Ipanema.
